Background
Karnali Academy of Health Sciences (KAHS) has been established in 20th October 2011 (2068/07/03), by an Act of parliament of Nepal. The goal of KAHS is to support in access of Quality healthcare services and education for the people of backward (Pichhadiyako) areas.The backward areas (9 districts) mentioned in act of KAHS are:Humla, Jumla, Kalikot, Dolpa, Mugu, Jajarkot, Bajura, Bajhang and Achham districts. Now other districts of Karnali Province are alsoincluded (Surkhet, Dailekh, Rukum and Salyan) according to federal system of Nepal. KAHS is one teaching and research institutions which is located in rural and remote area in Karnali province of Nepal. The School of Nursing and Midwifery at KAHS was established in 2012 and completed five batches of PCL nursing graduates. Similarly, Bachelor of Midwifery Science (BMS)program is started since 2018 to prepare the professional midwives which are the maternity care workforce of Nepal and the Bachelor of Nursing Science program (BNS) is started since 2021. Now the master of Nursing program is going to start immediately to upgrade and provide quality nursing education of international standard for the bachelor level nursing graduates of Nepal. The Master of Nursing program is needed in this province to produce High-level nursing workforce for health care delivery system of Nepal.
Nursing
We believe that nursing is a caring art and a science with a professional discipline and committed to promote, maintain and achieve optimal health of a client by utilizing a unique body of knowledge based upon theory, practice and behavioral sciences. Clients are individuals, families, groups and communities with health related concerns. We believe that competent nursing practice occurs when professional nurses demonstrate the values and ethics of the profession in their roles as caregiver, communicator, critical thinker, leader, manager, teacher and researcher.
Aim of the Master of Nursing Science program
The aim of master of nursing program is to prepare the competent graduate of high-level nurses who work independently as a member of health care team in different Health institutions/organizations, Academic institutions, hospitals, community setting to provide health service on preventive, promotive, curative and rehabilitative care as a researcher, manager, supervisor, coordinator, care provider, leader, teacher, evaluator, critical thinker, facilitator, Administrator, communicator, change agent, counselor, problem solver, advisor, advocator, planner, and motivator. Therefore, the main aim of this Master of nursing program is to prepare nurses who can use independent judgment in decision making process, leadership function, and conduct research in clinical and community setting for the nursing practice.
Objectives of the Master of Nursing Program
On the completion of the Master of nursing course, the graduates will be able to:
• Apply nursing theory and advanced principle of nursing skills in caring patient/client in the area of certain clinical specialty.
• Provide independent care for healthy people and collaborative care with other health professionals for different disease conditions as specialty.
• Utilize scientific evidence into clinical practice and incorporate the complementary and alternative therapies in education and practice
• Demonstrate leadership quality and function effectively as a service provider, educator, manager.
• Conduct and participate in research activities and generate the novel evidenced based practice in nursing and health.
• Discuss current national and international issues and trend in nursing.
• Demonstrate the cultural competence care to the individual, family and community.
• Establish the collaborative relationship with the members of own organization and outside the organization.
• Provide quality-nursing care by utilizing nursing process dealing with a problem of individual, family, group and community at different situation.
• Demonstrate competency in leadership quality and decision-making abilities in various care situation independently.
• Demonstrate positive attitudes to seek new knowledge for personal and professional growth.
• Apply ethical principles and moral values in their professional and personal-life.

Program structures
The master in Nursing (MN) has been structured to make it two academic years. In first year there are550 hours in theory and 1158 hours in practical. Similarly, in second year there are300hours in theory and 1470 hours in practical. The first academic year, subjects are Nursing Theories and Models, Nursing Research (Theory), Nursing Research (Practical), Education science (Theory), Education science (Practical), Biostatistics and computer application, Major Subject (Theory) (Community Health Nursing, Maternal Health Nursing, Medical Surgical Nursing; a) Critical Care Nursing and b) Ortho trauma Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Child Health Nursing), Major Subject (Practical), and Epidemiology. Similarly, in second academic year subjects are Tread and Issues in Nursing, Health Service Management and Leadership (Theory), Health Service Management and Leadership (Practical). Major Subject (Theory)(Community Health Nursing, Maternal Health Nursing, Medical Surgical Nursing; a) Critical Care Nursing and b) Ortho trauma Nursing, Mental Health Nursing, Child Health Nursing), Major Subject (Practical), and Thesis writing and Viva Voce.
Course Code Regarding the course code, each subject has specific course code number.
Duration of Course:
The duration of program shall be a minimum of two years.
Enrollment Process:
• Entrance examination will be taken by Medical Education Commission of Nepal Eligibility for Admission: to be eligible for selection of the Master of Nursing course, a candidate should;
• Have successfully completed 3 years’ Bachelor of Nursing Sciences(BNS) or 4 years B.Sc. Nursing from a recognized University, Academia or Institution, and should have secured pass mark.
• Have minimum one year of (clinical or teaching) job experience after successful completion of BNS or B.Sc. Nursing program
• Be registered in Nepal Nursing Council Selection Criteria
• Selection of candidates will be done on the basis of entrance examination followed by counseling
• Candidates will be selected on the basis of merits
• Candidates already registered in on postgraduate program will not be allowed to change another postgraduate program. If they want to change need to attend again the entrance examination Graduation requirement Master in nursing (MN) program is full time academic program. In order to receive the Master in nursing degree, a student must complete two academic years and must;
• Attend 90% of each theory course before being allowed to sit for internal assessment
• Attend 90% of the practicum in order to pass the practicum.
• Must pass internal assessment in each subject before being allowed to sit for the annual examination in the respective courses.
Examination policies
• Students must sit for internal assessment and final examination on the specified date set for examination
• If the students fail in the internal assessment, she/he will be given only one more chance for reassessment before the final examination.
• Students must pass all theory courses with a minimum of 50% theory and practical course with 60%.
• There will be final examination for both theory and practical courses.
